We’re thrilled to introduce our very first Mom of the Month, a heartfelt celebration of the incredible mothers in our community who are making a meaningful impact every day. From launching businesses and pursuing creative passions to volunteering their time and inspiring those around them, these women embody strength, resilience, and grace. This month, we’re excited to feature Ellette Shafer, whose energy, kindness, and drive make a big difference in the lives of everyone around her.
Meet Ellette Shafer
Ellette Shafer is originally from Georgia but has proudly called Spring Lake, North Carolina, home since 1975. She is a mother to one daughter and a loving grandmother to six beautiful grandchildren. You can find Ellette at Boyd's most days working on something crafty.

The Heart Behind the Handmade
Ellette is the proud owner of Boyd's Gifts and Engraving, a charming gift shop where creativity meets craftsmanship. Known for her beautifully hand-painted wooden items and custom laser engraving, Ellette offers a wide range of unique, personalized gifts. Her shop is filled with laser-cut and engraved treasures, and she even provides DIY kits so customers can add their own creative touch. One of her specialties is crafting meaningful, customized awards for soldiers at Fort Bragg. Ellette’s passion for her work shines through in every piece she creates, making Boyd’s a beloved spot in the community.

The Inspiration
Ellette’s stepfather, Herschel Boyd Sr., was on active duty in the United States Air Force when he founded Boyd’s Upholstery in Spring Lake in 1970. While still serving, he managed the business with the help of his wife, Eleanor Boyd.
In the 90s, Eleanor purchased her first monogramming machine. She worked diligently to secure contracts from Pope Air Force Base, further growing the family business.

In 2007, Ellette joined the business, working alongside her mother for 15 years and learning every aspect of the trade. In 2017, Herschel introduced Ellette to the world of laser engraving through his business named E & S Laser Engraving. As he aged, Herschel entrusted Ellette with the responsibility of carrying on the family legacy, knowing the business was in capable hands.
Tragically, in 2022, Ellette lost both her mother and stepfather within just three months of each other. In their honor, she renamed the business to what it is known as today: Boyd’s Gifts and Engraving.
Above the storefront, the original wooden letters handcrafted by Herschel proudly hang—a tribute to over five decades of family, craftsmanship, and love for the Spring Lake community. For more than 30 years, the Boyds have rented and worked from the same building, pouring their hearts into every product and customer interaction.
Ellette loves nothing more than to see her customers faces when she hands them their specialty made order. Their excitement is what inspires Ellette continuing to do what she loves.
